It starts with a question in the consultation
OUR STORY
When a skin lesion is uncertain, how can we provide the clinician with clearer information at the initial decision point?
THE PROBLEM THAT BROUGHT US TOGETHER
A GP may have only a short consultation to assess a skin lesion. Image quality can vary, and images, measurements, and clinical notes may be stored in different places.
There is also work around the image itself. Depending on the local pathway, clinicians and practice teams may need to capture photographs, transfer them to the clinical record, complete documentation, and attach images to a referral. Some services automate parts of this process.
SkinGuide+ grew from the need to bring useful information into clinical decision-making and connect the work around it.
A small mark A consequential decision
The project began through seed-funded collaboration between Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London.
The ambition was broader than an accurate model: to connect image capture, measurement, explanation, and reporting around the clinician’s workflow.
Measure provides the imaging and documentation foundation. Insight adds AI decision support, with the clinician’s diagnosis and management decision recorded separately.
More than an AI model
HOW IT BEGAN
Clinical questions, Engineering responses
BUILT TOGETHER
A working prototype, retrospective testing, and clinical co-design provide the foundation. Prospective evaluation in primary care is the next planned step.
The next phase will examine image quality, reliability, consultation fit, and performance across patient groups.
